One Last Breath

Even more, figures appeared from the south on Gunter, approaching at a casual pace. Though they identified themselves over the radio, they chose to hold off on the briefing until getting within speaking distance of the pastor. For a good reason, there was an unaware criminal traveling with them. Though Karen Sako followed them willingly, she had no idea what they were planning.

Facing the incoming party, Brother Brown stood on the sidewalk watching the sheeple readying the damned to his left. The Sanctuary building thankfully kept the twisted work out of view of the comers. Good thing the morons gagged the fucker’s. Otherwise, they’d be screaming and pitching a fit. “Waaah, we’re about to be tortured to death by a bunch of lunatics that think God commanded them to eat us!” Nobody gives a shit. After I deal with this dumbass bitch, I think I’ll go see how things are moving in the kitchen. Well, first things first, I gotta go check on the next piece of meat I’ll be preparing!

Rotating her head in confusion, Karen looked at the Reverend. “Brother Brown? Are you okay?”

“God is working all over this island. Why wouldn’t I be?”

She raised a finger. “Your... arm!”

Accidently slipping his mind, he ignored his lost appendage. Having to think about conducting a war, murdering innocent people, finding the mayor, and especially taking that little blonde-haired girl home for some fun, the missing extremity simply wasn’t at the forefront. Somehow, there wasn’t a whole lot of pain. Most considered his willingness to press on miraculous. He was just aware some shit had to be cleared up before he could get what he wanted.

Looking to his left and down, he gasped as if he just now realized it. “Oh! This? Just a little boo-boo. No big deal.” he shrugged.

Not a regular attendant of services, Karen knew of the preacher and respected him simply because he was a clergyman. Handing her swaddled baby, Candace, over to Katt, she stepped closer to The Wolf and made an offer. “You sure? I can make some herbal tea that helps with–“

Interrupting, he waved his hand before gesturing to the sanctuary doors. “Don’t worry about it. The Lord will see me through. And I need to talk to you about your husband.” She nodded vigorously and followed him into the nondenominational worship center.

With a sidled church member on either side of her, she sat on the front pew. Standing, Brother Brown took his place right in front of her. “Your husband is the reason I lost my arm...”

“What?” she shook her head.

Making sure the others were listening, he continued. “Your husband, Detective Hirotaro Sako, broke into my home just a couple of nights ago. I was preparing the meal for the next dinner on the church’s grounds when he started demanding money. Of course, all my worldly possessions go to further the kingdom of heaven. When I told him this, it angered him, knowing he would have to return to his overlords without a monetary prize.
